iType Plug-In Enables OEMs and Developers to Render Stylistic Fonts within a Low Recall Footprint

WOBURN, Mass. LONDON, Symbian Smartphone Show, closet 61, Oct. 21, 2008 Monotype Imaging Property Inc. Nasdaq: Manner , a leading global giver of book imaging solutions, has introduced Rim Technology, an advanced typescript description elucidation for manufacturers of memory-constrained, end user electronics devices. Available as an optional plug-in for Monotype Imaging s iType scalable typescript locomotive side 4.1, also announced today, Rim Knowledge debuts with typefaces that support Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages with clarity, uniformity and style.

Rim Knowledge encompasses book description and typescript hinting techniques methods for enhancement lettering that combine to achieve superior diagram outcome using scalable fonts in a low-memory footprint. Based on grayscale description technology, Rim Knowledge addresses key improvement challenges. Central to these are reminiscence boundaries and low VDT declaration setting that had suppressed the opening out of mode choices for end user electronics devices.

Rim has allowed us to lift barriers that have hindered the aptitude to offer stylistic typefaces optimized for memory-constrained devices, said John Seguin, executive vice leader of Monotype Imaging Inc. Through Edge, we are better positioned to quickly increase mode ease of use for end user electronics campaign worldwide. To start, we re beginning Rim as the foundation of a new East Asian elucidation that offers technique and class yet tackles difficult challenges OEMs have had to face.

Challenges include the aptitude to support upwards of more than 28,000 Chinese lettering with aesthetically pleasing typefaces, which have typically required sizeable memory, and the aptitude to display intricately shaped lettering clearly at small sizes. Rim introduces a new point of litheness because it reduces the need to sacrifice typographic technique in order to conserve gadget reminiscence and ensure legibility, said Steve Martin, vice leader of trade at Monotype Imaging Inc. Significant reminiscence is often necessary to grip the larger heading sizes of stylish East Asian fonts. Rim alleviates this transaction by enabling technique and legibility at all supported book sizes while retaining a low-memory footprint.

Rim Knowledge also introduces a grayscale correction capability, which enables modifications to night and sharpness. Smaller sized book can be adjusted to appear with higher VDT gap to aid legibility, while larger crop may be tuned for a softer appearance.

Fonts supported by Rim Technology
Rim Knowledge launches with a collection of four fonts based on Monotype Imaging s CATT Compact Asian Knowledge for TrueType format. Tuned for grayscale anti-aliased output, Edge-enabled TrueType fonts are engineered to preserve technique and legibility at small to large book sizes. Rim fonts are substantially smaller in heading volume than standard TrueType fonts. For example, a MHei technique unhinted TrueType typescript supporting the GB18030 Simplified Chinese temperament set requires 7.1 MB, compared to 3.8 MB required for the hinted Rim alternative.

East Asian Rim fonts available today:
- MHei design for Simplified Chinese GB18030 temperament set
- MHei design for Traditional Chinese Big5 HKSCS temperament set
- TB Kaku Gothic design for Japanese JIS208 temperament set
- MT Gothic design for Korean CP949 temperament set

As Monotype Imaging s most compact East Asian stroke-based solution, Edge-enabled stroke fonts are designed to retain legibility. Intricately shaped lettering are engineered to hold their dependability at small book sizes, achieved partly through a stroke decline process, which also occurs with Edge-enhanced TrueType fonts. Certain strokes that outward appearance lettering are removed automatically, which aids legibility without changing the sense of effected lettering that are otherwise at peril for displaying illegibly. Tuned for grayscale output, stroke-based Rim fonts are most suitable for memory-constrained, low-end campaign and individuals with low VDT resolutions. The first Edge-enabled stroke font, which determination support Japanese text, is expected to be released next month.

Fonts may also be optimized for use with Rim Knowledge from Monotype Imaging s OpenType - and TrueType-based collections for earth languages, as well as fonts from the corporation s Monotype , Linotype and ITC libraries.
